Overview

 

A Foam Maker is an important component of a foam fire suppression system. Its primary function is to transform a properly proportioned foam solution into finished firefighting foam.

Before reaching a Foam Maker, the foam concentrate has already been mixed with water through a Foam Proportioning System. The resulting mixture, known as a foam solution, is still a liquid. In order to become effective firefighting foam, air must be introduced into the solution under controlled conditions.

The Foam Maker performs this function by creating the hydraulic and aerodynamic conditions required for air aspiration and bubble formation. As the foam solution passes through the device, atmospheric air is drawn into the stream and mixed with the solution. The result is a mass of stable bubbles that can be discharged onto the protected hazard.

Depending on its design, a Foam Maker may produce low-expansion, medium-expansion, or high-expansion foam. Each type is intended for different fire protection applications.

Foam Makers are commonly installed in fixed fire protection systems protecting industrial facilities where flammable liquids or other high-risk hazards are present.
